In our most recent Pulse Survey, Adolescent Media Use: Mediation and Online Safety Features,
we asked 1,502 teens between the ages of 13 and 17 about their general
media use and its impact on their well-being, how they think about rules
and guidance from their parents and caregivers, and how they utilize
the safety tools and features provided by online platforms and apps.
Overall, the
findings show that teens are savvy digital media users. They also
generally approve of family rules for media use and understand that
while social media can boost social connections, it can negatively
impact aspects of their well-being, particularly mental health.
Further, while
young people are confident in their ability to manage their online
experiences and have a moderate understanding of community guidelines
and online safety features, concerns about social backlash or the
ineffectiveness of reporting can create barriers in using them.
