Zhiying (Zoey) Yue, Ph.D., is a Scientist at the Digital Wellness Lab where her work explores a range of individual and contextual factors that influence strategic social media use and its relationship with children’s and adolescents’ mental health and social and physical well-being. Her work has been published in journals such as Information, Communication, and SocietyNew Media and SocietyComputers in Human Behavior, and Journal of Community and Applied Social Psychology.

Dr. Yue received her doctorate in Communication from the University at Buffalo, SUNY. She also holds an MS in New Media from the Chinese University of Hong Kong and a bachelor’s degree in Online Communication from Wuhan University, China.

In 2025, Dr. Yue was awarded the prestigious Charles E. Irwin, Jr. New Investigator Award from the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine. Her research, Gaming Alone Together: The Role of Loneliness and Social Anxiety in Adolescent Video Gaming Behaviors, explores the deep connections between teen mental health and gaming habits. These findings challenge the idea that screen time alone is the issue, instead, we must focus on how and with whom teens engage in digital spaces.
