Childhood Obesity and Ethnicity
New published research in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine brings attention to racial/ethnic disparities in obesity among 4-year-old US children.
CMCH Director, Dr. Michael Rich called the disparities between ethnic groups disturbing and points out that children who live in neighborhoods which are perceived as dangerous, stay indoors more and have less access to fresh foods, essential for healthy weight in children.
Educational Videos = Smarter Kids?
Many parents believe that educational videos will make their young children smarter. CMCH Director, Dr. Michael Rich, argues that young children learn through face-to-face interaction, by manipulating their physical environment, or through open-ended problem-solving, not by sitting in front of a TV screen.
The
American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen media for children under age two and until children are older, Dr. Rich suggests parents to let young children engage in simple activities such as banging on pots and pans.
