Media Reflections Card Game

This conversation game is designed to help kids and adults notice and reflect on patterns in their online experiences, explore what shapes their screen habits, and build awareness and a shared language around digital wellbeing. There are no right or wrong answers, nor is the game about enforcing rules. The goal is simple: reflect honestly and listen openly.

How to Play

For 2–6 players. Can be played by kids, adults, or both.

Step 1

Shuffle each deck of cards, keeping decks separate from each other and face down.

Step 2

Taking turns, draw a Scenario Card (Kids, Grown-Ups, or Caregivers) and read it out loud.

Step 3

Draw 4 Response Cards (Action, Feeling, or mix of both). Pick best or worst response to the scenario, explain why.

Step 4

Other players ask questions (see Reflection Questions below)

Step 5

Next player takes a turn.

Ending the Game

Play a few rounds, or for as long as the conversation feels helpful. Before moving onto the next activity, use the Closing Questions (below) to think about your overall experience.

Reflection Questions

Use these as prompts for questions while you’re playing the game. You don’t need to ask every question each round—choose a few that feel most relevant to the situation. Feel free to ask your own questions and share your thoughts as well!

  • Why did you choose this card as the best or worst response?
  • What’s another way you could respond?
  • Would your choice change depending on the situation? How?
  • How might you feel in this situation?
  • How could those feelings affect what you do?
  • What could happen if you respond this way?
  • What would you need in this situation?
  • Any obstacles?

Closing Questions

Before you move on to the next activity, take a little time to reflect on what you learned about yourself and others during the game.

  • Did anyone choose something surprising?
  • Is there a response you might want to try next time?
  • What did you learn about yourself?
  • What did you learn about each other?
  • Have you noticed any patterns in how you use your device?
  • When does this pattern feel balanced? Less balanced?
  • What does balanced digital use look like in your family?
